The Resilience Focus Area focuses on addressing the racial, environmental, and economic injustices that take place in Cincinnati’s most marginalized neighborhoods in order to drive adaptation to promote an equitable future for all.

NOTE: The Plan cannot possibly capture all ideas, but we want to be sure that it captures the most impactful. Please keep this in mind as you review.

unknown author4 years ago 1. Develop contingency plans for Cincinnati-area risks (Flooding, Overpopulation, Displacement, Affordable Housing. People cannot combat, or even think about, climate change when they're food or housing insecure.) 2. Launch an Electric Vehicle Car-Sharing Program in disadvantaged neighborhoods (Since no-one is going to choose an electric car if the cost to have one is a massive barrier.) 3. Address fuel poverty, exacerbated by recent events, and create forums for all residents to participate-not at a fancy hotel or swanky meeting place at 8:30 in the morning where people don't have the time, privilege, or resources to be. (I'm educated & slightly connected to various nonprofits, and even I can't get ahold of the mayor, council, or decision-makers to write any policies or canvass any neighborhoods for research. Imagine our residents without a degree or a computer who are going to be impacted the most and the quickest by climate change.)

unknown author4 years ago We must start thinking more about the long term sustainability of regional projects. Such a requirement must be built in to all projects bid or otherwise so we don't just end up pursuing projects that meet a short term need but which won't meet our long term needs or cannot be maintained in the long term. For example, landscaping that is high maintenance increases costs in the long run and may have to be eliminated or modified in the future if the size and type of plants or their maintenance costs are not taken into consideration up front. 2. I have already written about better flood and storm water planning, but some plants that prefer a colder climate than we are likely to have in our future should be reconsidered (eg., sugar maple trees and spruce trees).

Yes, health hasn't been a major the topic of discussion, I think most residents are focusing on the climate only. We must add or place the health impact that may consume the community.

Equity needs to be embedded. we will need more heating and cooling centers and better access to electrified mobility.

Explain what you mean by resilience.

Create a p3 to strengthen our systems in the city as part of embedded neighborhood citywide CERT push

Create testing and action planning.

Mapping heat is great but can we also map instances of overland flooding due to extreme rain events

Trauma-informed care and mindfulness as basic trainings for all public servants

1. Secure hillsides from errosion and collapse; 2. more daylighting of underground streams; 3. 10 years free charging for electric vehicles;

Change zoning laws and incentives to build more population density with walkable neighborhoods with good access to public transportation.

stop crime and panhandling so it is safe to walk more.

Incentives for utilization of rapidly renewable recourses such as hemp...

No more band-aid temporary solutions for issues (like the walls on Columbia Parkway put into place to "block" landslides.) More sustainable, long-term solutions like restoring hillside ecosystems to prevent landslides from taking place.

Add battery energy storage systems to help manage high electrical grid loads.

1. More trees to support all kinds of wildlife. 2 Better storm water control with natural methods, not bigger pipes. 3 Try to reduce water loss.

The decision to use an electricity vendor that does not utilize Net Metering is disappointing. This was obviously a decision made with financial input and not environmental input.

Increase in residences of 1500 sq. ft. and less

Let us take some of these Brownfields, use federal dollars and any monies raised from enforcement fees, and develop resilience hubs. We can create a residential green infrastructure front yard program like Chicago or New Orleans has done.

Start educating about all these issues beginning in First Grade. Conduct public education campaigns throughout the city, including social media and neighborhood community councils.

Improve basic services in all neighborhoods, especially those that have been "forgotten" this will improve resiliency overall.

Do we have a rapid energy descent plan. Can we help community councils plan around climate catastrophe emergencies so there is a more decentralized way to mobilize.

As a former planner said: Whatever the problem, trees are part of the solution. Crime? plant trees. Lousy park? plant trees. Want people to walk to the store? plant trees.
